NHSBSA Prescription Services process prescriptions for Pharmacy Contractors, Appliance Contractors, Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration with information then used to make payments to pharmacists and appliance contractors in England for prescriptions dispensed in primary care settings (other arrangements are in place for making payments to Dispensing Doctors and Personal Administration). This involves processing over 1 billion prescription items and payments totalling over £9 billion each year. The information gathered from this process is then used to provide information on costs and trends in prescribing in England and Wales to over 25,000 registered NHS and Department of Health and Social Care users.

The data source was the NHSBSA DPC Database.

The time period covered is the January 2019 to March 2019 dispensing months.

The data covers English pharmacies only (including Local Pharmaceutical Services contracts).

The Pharmacy Name given is the trading name of the pharmacy where available, otherwise the pharmacy account name has been used.

The data can be split into two parts:

1. The advance payments/information made in respect of the dispensing month shown (calculated in the previous month):
              
            •           Advance Payment on account (£)
            •           No. of advance items
            •           No. of advance charges

2. The actual payments/information made in respect of the dispensing month shown:

            •           Total of account (£)
            •           Total of items for which a fee is paid
            •           Total no. of charges

Please note that in this dataset the term "items" is used to mean "fees".

If there are is no information regarding an advanced payment for a pharmacy, it indicates that that pharmacy's submission 
was not received in time for the advance to be automatically calculated.
