A copy of the information is attached. This is information on the number and average age when hospital doctors claimed their pension on the basis of age, early retirement, and ill health. This has been broken into each year from 2007/08 to 2017/18 and also into 1995/2008 and 2015 Schemes. Whilst the figures indicate the numbers of staff who claimed their NHS pension in a specific pension year they do not necessarily indicate the number who actually retired.  This is because some of them will have returned to the NHS after claiming their NHS pension, albeit maybe in a reduced capacity. The NHSBSA does not hold data in respect of the number of staff who retire from non-pensionable posts.  The information is based on doctors working within a hospital when they retired and is based on all Capacity Code 3 and Employment Type 3 (specialists) and Type 2 (non-specialist). It is important to note that the statistics attached are not for unique members but for the number of pensions claimed in each Scheme.  A doctor can have membership in more than one Section or Scheme and can take age and early retirement and even ill health at the same time.  It is likely that the majority of the 2015 figures are for transitional members which means they will have also taken benefits from either 1995, 2008 or both as well as their 2015 pension and this will show has 2 or 3 entries with in the spreadsheet.  The information supplied to you continues to be protected by the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and is subject to NHSBSA copyright.
