Request: Can you please confirm how many “death benefit” claims were received for members with less than two year’s service, within the last 5 years? How much total benefit was paid out for these claims, within the last 5 years? Are/would these monies be paid from the NHS Pension fund or covered by insurance? [On 4 October 2019 you clarified the following:]Clarification as requested: • As far as death benefit, I am referring to initial pension and/or lump sum, shown separately if possible. • Active or deferred members with less than two years membership only • All scheme members that fall within the above category I am trying to establish how frequently death benefits are paid out to those members with less than two years membership and the extent of those payments. Effectively trying to establish the cost to NHS Pensions for this type of claim, or is there some type of insurance so such funds would not be taken out of NHS Pension funds in this scenario. [On 30 October 2019 you clarified the following:] Yes I would agree that the focus should be on the financial value questions and the last question of how these are funded.
